Suji upma |
We generally eat suji or rava or semolina by making halwa which is a sweet dish. But Suji Upma is a savoury recipe. It is a South Indian style breakfast recipe where semolina is cooked with curry leaves, mustard seeds and vegetables. It's very easy to prepare. We can also make burfi of this savoury semolina recipe and can be served with tea.

Suji Upma Recipe / South Indian Style Savoury Semolina Breakfast Recipe

INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup suji / semolina
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp chana dal
- 1-2 sprigs of curry leaves
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 green chillies, finely chopped
- 1/3 cup chopped vegetables (French beans, cabbage, carrot, capsicum etc.)
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1/2 tsp cumin powder
- Salt to taste
METHOD:
- Dry roast semolina on a medium heat until they turns golden colour. Immediately transfer into a plate. Keep aside.
- In a pan heat oil. Add mustard seeds. When seeds began to sputter, add chana dal and curry leaves.
- Add chopped onions and vegetables.
- Add salt and in medium heat cook until the vegetables become soft and tender.
- Now add roasted semolina. Add 1 cup of water or more if required. Stir well to prevent lumps. Bring to boil. Cook until water absorbed.
- Remove from heat and serve hot.
- To make burfi, immediately transfer semolina into a flat utensil or tray. Level it well with a spatula. Let it cool and thereafter cut into pieces.
